Paulina was a daughter of Eli Pruitt and Barbara Matilda Kivett. At the age of 12 she contracted Cerebral Spinal Meningitis which left her deaf.
In 1866, at the age of 15, she was admitted to the Indiana Institute for the Deaf which was the first state school in the nation to offer a free education.
Paulina was the second wife of John Mastin Arnot. John was born about 1841 in Carroll Co., Indiana, the son of Jacob Arnot and Rebecca Thomas who were natives of Monroe Co., Virginia.
John was deaf at birth as were two of his siblings. John also attended the Indiana Institute for the Deaf and was admitted at the age of 11 in 1852.
John's first wife, Aurilla Eldred, was also born deaf and she attended the Indiana Institute for the Deaf from the age of about 10 until the age of about 17. John and Aurilla were the parents of Sarah, Asbury and Alfred who were also deaf and all were educated at the Indiana Institute for the Deaf.
Paulina Jane Pruitt married John Mastin Arnot on June 20, 1875, in Lake Valley, Morgan Co., IN. This union was blessed by the birth of five children; Leroy Pruitt, Lorie Grant, Eli Jacob, John Kivett, and Anna M. Arnot. All of these five children were hearing.
Paulina may have passed away in Chicago, Illinois, because the 1910 census shows her husband and three of their children living together in Chicago. This census shows her husband, John, plying his trade as a shoemaker/repairer.
Eli and John are shown as students at the University of Chicago and Anna is a music student.
