LYONS POINT - Funeral services will be held Thursday February 24, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Lyons Point, for Douglas Joseph Abshire, 67, born February 4, 1944, passed away on February, 22, 2011 at his home, in Kaplan, La.

He was the son of Gerald and Bertha Abshire, and a graduate of Indian Bayou High School. He retired from the National Guard after 20 years of service, and retired from Rayne Plane as shop foreman after 38 years. He was involved in 4-H of Vermilion Parish, a member of the Louisiana and Vermilion Cattlemen's Association and the Louisiana Sheep Producers Association. He also enjoyed cooking with his son and his grandchildren and was proud of all their accomplishments. Douglas was a loving son, a cherished brother, a devoted husband, an admired father and father-in-law, an adored grandfather, a caring uncle, and a true friend. He was a great man and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Effie Broussard Abshire; his son and daughter-in-law, "Tee" Wayne and Christy Abshire; two sisters, Helen Miller and her husband, Otis, and Gloria Beasley, and her husband, Bill; two brothers, Carlton Abshire and wife, MaeDell, and Gerald Abshire, Jr. and wife, Gail; two grandchildren, Mary and Matthew Abshire; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Bertha Abshire, and his daughter, Aline.

Visitation will be held Wednesday February 23, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., Duhon Funeral Home in Crowley, on and will resume on Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.

Burial will be held in Abshire Cemetery under the direction of Duhon Funeral Home of Crowley.

The family would like to thank the staff at STAT Home Health and St. Joseph Hospice for their care.
