Clarence was the son of George Arthur Hoadley and Ida Arabella Burtch. Mr Hoadley was a professor at Swarthmore, when Clarence earned his BS in 1897.

Clarence caused a scandal when he became engaged to and wed a widow 15 years his senior. After they were married they moved to California where Clarence was engaged as an automobile dealer, and for a time was a partner in Scott & Hoadley. They had the franchise to sell the Stanley automobiles in Los Angeles.
