He moved to Hollywood, California in the 1930s and appeared in director Rouben Mamoulian's "Song of Songs" (1933). His other film appearances include "Sylvia Scarlett" (1936), "Juarez" (1939), for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, Alfred Hitchcock's "I Confess" (1953), "Titanic" (1953), and "The Swan" (1956), in which he played a kindly monk. He was married to actress Joan Fontaine from 1939 to 1945.
