Elizabeth M. Brummer, the only child of Bernard J. and Margaret Suer Brummer, journeyed with her parents to the United States, arriving in 1839. She was born in Hanover, Germany, and her father was one of the first settlers in Douglas Township. She learned to speak English by working for a tavern keeper on Salt Creek.
At age 16, she married Anton Bernard Jansen, who had worked on her father’s farm, at Teutopolis. They had 11 children, with the first two, John Bernard and Anthony Bernard, dying when young. Her husband, son William John and daughters Helena Schmidt and Mary Kaufman also preceded her in death.
Her obituary in the Jan. 18, 1906, Teutopolis Press stated, “She settled in this county in 1839, having come with her parents here from Germany. At that time Teutopolis had but a few log houses and Effingham was not thought of... She was a good Christian lady and had a host of friends throughout the community.”
The other children were Henry J., John H., Elizabeth Hussman, Melania Kaufman Schmidt, Philomina Fellhoelter, and Tony Jansen. She died at Green Creek, Jan 14, 1906, at age 79 of old age.
