From Holland St. John - "William was the eldest son of Job and Elizabeth (Jones) Oliver. He was born on the family farm in Robinson Township on December 2, 1844. He was born into one of the most prominent pioneer families of southwestern Indiana. His father became one of the large land owner of the county, was actively concerned in the early development of Center Township, a man of influence and possessed the esteem of all, according to one published source. The town of Oliver was named in honor of his father Job, the townsite being a part of one of his farms. William was reared on his father's farm and his education was acquired in the schools of Robinson township. Farming was his occupation since boyhood and he was recognized as not only one of the successful men in that field of endeavor within his county, but was also one of the influential citizens of his township. Political office had never appealed to him, althought he took an active interest in the questions of the day and never neglected his civic duties. He was a Democrat. His farm of 128 acres was well improved, well stocked and had been his place of residence since 1873. William had been twice married. In December of 1866, he married Rachel Causey, who died August 9, 1870. She bore him two children: John and Walter. On January 16, 1873, he married his second wife Cornelia Fillingim. Of this second union three children were born: the eldest died in infancy, Otis and Elsie. By 1880 William was farming in Center Township. He was thirty-five, Conrelia was thirty-one. Their two children Otis (4), Elsie (5/12), step-son Ally Anderson (10) and James P. Evans (18) were living on the farm. By 1900 Willian (55), Cornelia (51) with no children living at home were still on the farm. His brother James (35) and his wife were farming next door. By 1920 William and Cornelia, both in their 70s, were still living. William died on October 2, 1924 and is buried in Fillingim Cemetery located in Posey County, Indiana."
