American composer and teacher. Thompson was noted chiefly for his choral works, though his output includes 3 symphonies, 2 string quartets, and 2 operas. He studied at Harvard and the Eastman School of Music. He was director of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia (where his students included Samuel Barber, Giancarlo Menotti, and Leonard Bernstein), and held teaching positions at the University of Virginia and Harvard. Among his most famous choral works are The Testament of Freedom (setting of text by Thomas Jefferson), Frostiana (settings of Robert Frost poems), The Peaceable Kingdom, and his most well-known work, Alleluia.
