SCULLY, Olempio "Ole" -- Murdered by the Black Hand -- Chicago Tribune --1928, December 18, 1928, Article in the Chicago Tribune December 18, 1928.
In the murder of Ole Scully, a wealthy Italian sewer contractor, of 7658 S. Laflin St. last night, the state was cheated of the testimony of an important witness against the men who went to trial yesterday accused of kidnapping 10 year old Billy Ranieri for ransom. The state was demanding the death penalty for Angelo Petitti, reputed head of a Mafia extortion ring; Andrew Cappellano, who kept Billy at his home 13 days, and Tony Cappellano, son of Andrew.
Message telling of Killing.
"Ole Scully was killed and the heads or arms of five of his companions were broken with baseball bats by five men who followed them into a restaurant at 1421 West Taylor Street.".
Scully lived at 7658 S. Laflin St. Scully who Americanized his former name of Scalzitti is the second cousin of A. Frank Ranieri, father of kidnapped 10 year old, Billy Ranieri of 4901 Altgoeld St.
Ole's family at the time of his death consisted of his wife Vincenza, daughter Lydia 17, sons Laurence 19, and Albert (Bert) age 20. He was to be a key witness to the Billy Ranieri kidnapping, but was killed when the trial started. In a Chicago Tribune article on December 18, 1928 "Mafia Strikes as Kidnapping Trial Starts- Beat five men with Baseball Bats" Victim's Fears Told, "Scully came to me Friday" prosecutor Samuel A. Hoffman stated. "He said he had plenty of money and he would spend all that was necessary to keep Petitti in jail as his life wouldn't be worth a nickel if Petitti got out" Hoffman also stated that his own live had been threatened.
Scully had assisted the prosecutors in implicating Petitti not only in the Ranieri kidnapping but in many other extortion cases. A list of Petitti's victims was compiled by him and given to the prosecutors and yesterday it was made public.

Petitti was indicted on some of the extortion charges and Scully had furnished an important part of the evidence, in the form of three checks made payable to and endorsed by Petitti. Attempts to intimidate every state witness have been made, and most of the Black Hand victims were in a mood to repudiate the testimony they gave against Petitti, but Scully held them to the truth and to their promises to rid the city of a menace to their people.
