In May 1968 the Marines staged a major offensive on Go Noi Island, which was formed by the confluence of several rivers and which had been a VC/NVA bastion for years. While the enemy's infrastructure in the area was destroyed, 52 Marines were killed in the action. Lance Corporal Donald Bryon Jones was one of six Marines from Mike Company, 3/27th Marines, lost on 18 May 1968:
