Slain Man Shot Once in Back of Head
An autopsy Thursday revealed that William Frank Edmonds, 48, an East Dallas liquor store operator slain in his shop Wednesday, was shot once in the back of the head at close range with a large-caliber gun.
Homicide Capt. Will Fritz said the bullet appeared to have been fired from a .38 caliber type weapon. He added that there were powder burns on the victim's head.
Edmonds, who lived at 5609 Victor, was found by a customer about 5:25 p.m., lying on the floor of his Beacon Liquor Store, 5531 Columbia. He was dead on arrival at Baylor Hospital.
Fritz said Edmonds apparently turned from the counter to a refrigerator, and may have been getting some beer for his unknown assailant whe the shot was fired. The cooler door was found open and a can of beer lay on the floor near the body.
Fritz said he was unsure as to whether robbery was the motive for the killing, since there was several thousand dollars untouched in the store safe, cash register and in the dead man's pockets. There was also a valuable coin collection and four guns in the store, all undisturbed.
