Mose was my great-grandfather. He was born Moise Couture to Joseph F. Couture & Sara Maria Gagnon in New York. He had an older sister, Elmira.
They settled in Michigan when Mose was 8 years old. He was a well-respected farmer in the Reeman/Sheridan area of Newaygo County. For unknown reasons, he unofficially changed his name to Mose Coutchie except on Catholic Church records. It stuck and all of his children had the name and it is still the family name today.
He had diabetes and had a leg amputated due to gangrene caused from this. He died of septicemia (blood poisoning) in an Ann Arbor hospital.
He married Virginia DeMars on May 18, 1896. They had 9 children: Ila (my grandmother), Valoura, Della (died at age 13 during an emergency appendectomy), Sidney, Mae, Eugene, Moses (who died at 1 month of age), Napoleon, and Dorothy.
