28 September 1893 - West Branch Times

DIED--At the home of her son J. W. Gray in Tipton Sept. 16th, 1893, of senile decay and disease, Mrs. Eliza Gray aged 82 years 6 mos and 2 days. The funeral was conducted at her late home the following Monday Sept. 18th, the interment at Pedee.

Eliza Bolen was born in Louden county Virginia March 18th, 1811. While still a child she removed with her parents to Harrison Co. Ohio where she grew to womanhood devolping traits which became such marked characteristics in later life. On Feb. 23rd 1832 she was united in marriage with Ebnezer A Gray a man even then of much forsight and energy and to whom she became a trusted and congenial companion. In 1839 they came to Iowa in search of the advantages denied in the narrow limits of the older state, settling on the banks of the Cedar in Cedar county and the vicinity now known as North Liberty. Here amid the haunts of the red man, loneliness and solitudes she was enabled through the unusual forces of her nature to arise superior to her surroundings and combat successfully with the trials of pioneer life, aiding and comforting her husband in his struggles, and training her children until as time rolled around she rested from her labors in a home of competence amid a smiling land rescued forever from its dangers and wildness. Such in brief is the record of the life just ended. To the casual reader it may appear only as a "tale that is told" or the outlines of a book that is sealed. But those who have been privileged with intimate communion, who feel in parting with the loved one they have suffered a loss, dwell on the details of the narrative and feel a mournful interest in the contents folded away in those more than four score pages. Even from the time she early assumed the burdens of life, through maidenhood when her graces and virtues were sufficient to attract the venturesome spirit which was destined there after to walk by her side, to the period when her firmness and courage were an inspiration to the faint and faltering and her ministrations a savor of life unto life to the sorrowing and suffering craving her aid. And last but not least to the benign old age, with faculties replete and capacities for enjoyment little impaired, passing calmly to that bourne where the companion of her youth has been waiting her lo, these many years. But she will be greatly missed by the M.P. church of which she was a consistent member, missed by her children of whom five live to bless her memory, missed by her grand children and others who owed their early homes to her, and missed by a large circle of relatives and friends who fuly felt and knew her worth. But in view of the physical infirmities of her later days we can only bow our heads.
