Member of North Carolina state legislature, U.S. Representative from North Carolina 1st District, 1867-1869. In 1869 he was elected Sergeant-At-Arms of the U.S. Senate, a position he held for 10 years. Later in his life he moved to Boise, Idaho where he was the editor of the Boise Statesman and Daily Sun newspapers.
