James Gunn
Birth: Mar. 6, 1843
Death: 1911

US Congressman. As a boy his family emigrated from Ireland to America settling in Wisconsin. He attended public schools as a child before attending Notre Dame Academy in Indiana. Later he taught school until the Civil War called him to serve his country. In 1862 he joined the 27th Wisconsin Infantry and served with the Union Army until the end of the war. He reached the rank of captain. After the war he moved west living in Colorado, Nevada and California before settling in Hailey, Idaho in 1881. In Idaho he entered into the newspaper business as both a publisher and an editor. He was a member of the Populist Party and ran for state office on several occasions. From 1892 to 1898 he ran for Congress four times, but won only once when he was elected to serve as Idaho's lone representative in 1896. He served one term from 1897 to 1899. After he lost his reelection bid he returned to Idaho where he served as supervisor of the Idaho Soldier's Home. He died in Boise, Idaho. (bio by: Bigwoo)
