Senator Ethan B. Allen, often General Allen after his service in the War of 1812, was among the most prominent of the early lawyers of the county of Genesee and was a man of high character and unusual attainments. In personal bearing he was a gentleman of the old school. He was born in Columbia County, October 21st 1787 and died April 19th 1835. The son of Benjamin Allen and Hannah Rowley, he was the father-in-law of the distinguished advocate and jurist, Isaac A. Verplanck. He was appointed surrogate by the board of supervisors and then re-elected for the term 1822-1824. He was vice President of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, a Master of the Court of Chancery, and a State Senator from this district from 1826 to 1830. Upon his tombstone are inscribed the words intelligent, virtuous, and affectionate, he fulfilled the various duties of a legislator, a citizen, and a friend. His wife was Harriet E Seymour, and his daughters were the wife of the Hon. Isaac Verplanck as mentioned previously, Mrs Thomas Foote wife of another Jurist, and the wife of the Hon. Seth Ely Sill, N.Y. Supreme Court Justice.
