William Clayton married Lucinda Flowers on December 27, 1876, in Jasper, Jasper County, Missouri, USA. To this union were born 13 children. Two of their children died in infancy, and a daughter, Alice, died by the age of 16.

W. R. Clayton, aged 65 years died suddenly at his home, nine miles northwest of Stroud, Tuesday night, Oct. 30th, of heart disease. The funeral services were conducted from the residence Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock, by Rev. J. P. Murphy. The remains were buried at the Stroud cemetery. He leaves a wife and ten children, six girls and four boys to mourn their loss. The deceased was dearly loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him.
