Steve Goodman
Birth: Jul. 25, 1948
Illinois, USA
Death: Sep. 20, 1984
Washington, USA

Singer, Songwriter, Musician. Founded Pajamas Records in 1982. Penned "City of New Orleans" and "You Never Even Called Me By My Name". He explained the origin of the song to Chicago's WGN Radio host Roy Leonard in 1972: "Nancy and I were going to a small town in southern Illinois on the Illinois Central to visit her grandmother who was in an old folks home down there. I just took out this sketch pad and wrote about what I saw out the windows of the train. Nancy was still asleep after an hour and I went down to the club car and ended up playing cards with a couple of old men. Everything in the song actually happened." His ashes were partly scattered in Wrigley Field because it was a "dying cubs fan last wish," according to the lyrics of one of his songs. (bio by: Scott L. Spencer)

Remembering Steve 30 years later. The Angels are in first place again and, yes, "they still play the blues in Chicago when baseball season rolls around..." RIP, young music man.
