A. Lederle of Portland, a business visitor in Fulton, told of a valuable mare owned by H. Zumstag, that was killed by staples having been picked up by the animal while eating.
Mr. Lederle and Monroe Atterberry are the embryotic veterinary surgeons of that community and performed a post mortem revealing a number of staples imbedded in the intestines of the horse. A box of nails and staples was found where the hay was fed to the horse.

Monroe Otterman Atterberry, 72, of Portland, Missouri, died Wednesday, August 20, 1947 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter (Jessie) Bell, of Myocardial degeneration, Metastasis of carcinoma of the abdominal structures. He had prostrate surgery where the primary carcinoma had its origin seven years ago. He had been ill for six years.
He was a native of Callaway County and was born in Portland, Missouri on December 6, 1874 to James M. and Susan Benskin Atterberry. He married Mable Haven Harrison who preceeded him in death in 1931.
Mr. Atterberry operated a farm until illness curtailed his activities.
His wife, the former Miss Mabel Haven Harrison, died in 1931.
There were 10 children, he is survived by nine children, James Rudolph Atterberry, Helen Jessie E. Atterberry, Mrs. Walter (Sylvia May) Bell, Mrs. Mattie Lee (Walter) Newsom, Hannah Atterberry, Susan E.L. Atterberry, Osroe "Jockey" Atterberry, Virginia Jewell Atterberry, Catherine Atterberry, Velma K. Atterberry and twenty-seven grandchildren.
Barton-Baker Funeral Home in Americus, Missouri in charge of services and burial was in Atterberry-Benskin Cemetary with Reverand O. Gregory officiating.

Thompson, of New Florence, Missouri pronounced death caused by Myocardial Degeneration, duration of one week, Metastasis of Carcinomatosis of Abdomen to Thoracic Structures, duration of two months, extensive Abdominal Carcinomatosis, several years duration contributed to by Senility. Surgery of Prostrate where Primary Carcinoma had its origin. The informant was Jessie Ellen Bell of Portland.
Mr. Atterberry was born December 6, 1874, in rural Portland, Missouri, the son of J.M. and Susan (Benskin) Atterberry, born in Big Springs, Missouri and Portland. He was united in marriage to Mable Haven Harrison and she preceded him in death on 1931. Mr. Atterberry was a retired farmer.
Arrangements were under the care of Barton Baker of Americus. Burial was in the Benskin-Atterberry Cemetery.
