Son of George HUFFORD and Mary "Polly" VEST.
He married Martha SPENCER in 1842. He was 38 years old and the father of ten children when he enlisted in the Union Army on October 31, 1861. His children were Abraham, Isaac Wesley, Jasper, Preston, Mary, Martha, Permelia Jane, Jackson, Darcas Ophelia, and John.
His son Abraham enlisted a year after James enlisted; his son died in service in May 1864. James went on to serve another 15 months after his son died. He mustered out August 14, 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas.
In 1870, James was farming in Fulton County, Illinois, living with his wife and four of their children.
He was widowed in January 1879. By 1880, he was working at a sawmill and living as a boarder in the household of a young couple. By 1890, he was living in Polk County, Missouri.
He died as a result of an accident at a train switchyard. He was run over by one of the train cars at the switching yard, cut to pieces, and killed instantly. He was 77.
