Francis Kurtz, 74, a farmer and rancher and resident of Gildford, died March 31, 1996 at a Great Falls hospital of natural causes.
Francis was born Feb. 1, 1922 at Havre, the son of Frank and Alice (Dunn) Kurtz, and lived on the family farm south of Gildford his entire life. He attended Pride of the Prarie Grade School, one year at Dodson High School, and graduated from Havre High School in 1940, and attended Northern Montana College. On June 4, 1950 he married Gertrude Sten at Waubay, S.Dak. After their marriage the couple lived on the family farm south of Gildford. Francis was engaged in farming and ranching all his life. In 1976 he introduced beefalo to the Hi-Line area. He took joy in gardening and special pride in his black walnut and fruit trees. He was a member of the Gildford Odd Fellows Lodge for several years. He served on several boards and was a member of the Sons of Norway.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Vernon, and a brother-in-law, Andy Fyall, and two nephews, Dave Nordrum and Bruce Fyall. He is survived by his wife Trudy of Gildford; Lynn Kurtz of Missoula, Lee Kurtz of Gildford; daughter, Nancy Peterson of North Havre; sisters, Marion Fyall of Edmonds, Wash., Grace Nordrum of Columbia Falls.
Funeral services at the Holland and Bonine Chapel in Havre. Burial in Gildford cemetery.
