Wilbur Newell Fitzgerald, 83, husband of Emma Marie (Eakin) Fitzgerald, died Monday, February 7, 2011, in Augusta Health, Fishersville.

He was born May 31, 1927 in Montebello, a son of the late Golden and Ruth (Layton) Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II.

Prior to retirement, he was employed by Crompton with 31 years of service.

He was a member of Greenville Baptist Church and Steeles Tavern VFW Post 8279.

In addition to his wife, family members include Donald Ray Fitzgerald of Fairfield; two daughters, Carol Yvonne St. Clair of Fairfield and Connie Marie Groah of Steeles Tavern; seven sisters, Sibyl Coyner, Bertha McClung, Eva Hamilton, Margie (Jane) Houser, Doris (Gin) Sweet, Betty Thacker, and Rebecca (Jodie) Truxell; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Scott Fitzgerald; four brothers, Alton Fitzgerald, Wallace Fitzgerald, Ernest Ross Fitzgerald, and Lewis Elvin Fitzgerald; and a granddaughter, Chantel Marie Groah.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday,February 11,2011,in Greenville Baptist Church by the Rev. Marshall Braylo. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Graveside rites will be conducted by Steeles Tavern VFW Post 8279.

Active pallbearers will be his eight grandsons.

At the family's request, there will be no public viewing.

Memorials may be made to the Greenville Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Georgie Meyerhoeffer, 1583 Stuarts Draft Highway, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477.
