William (as he was known) was born in Pennsylvania to Nicholas and Anna Marie (nee Weber). He moved with the family from Heidelberg Township, PA to Baltimore in 1791. In 1804, he was appointed trustee of his father's failing tobacco business and by 1814 had repaid all debts and himself was a successful tradesman. By 1814 on, he is listed in the Baltimore Business Directories as a tobacconist.
He married Margaret Boyd on 10/18/1810. That marriage produced six children. After Margaret's death in 1824 he remarried Mary Ann McGinnis on August 22, 1827. From this, at least 5 children were born
He continued in the tobacco business until his death. Originally buried at Baltimore Pro Cathedral cemetery, he was moved along with his second wife, his father Nicholas, and several grandchildren to New Cathedral when the old cemetery closed. The plot was purchased by his son, George Marion who also rests there with his wife.
