Prior to his appointment as Bishop he served as the Abbot of the New Melleray Abbey (located about 10 miles southwest of Dubuque). He was named Coadjutor Bishop in 1857 due to the failing health of Bishop Loras. He served from 1858 to 1865 as the second Bishop of the Dubuque Diocese. (bio by: Jesse)
