Arthur Waugh was born in Midsomer Norton in Somerset, the son of a doctor of Scottish descent. He was educated at Sherborne School in Dorset and New College, Oxford where, in 1888, he won the Newdigate Prize for English Verse. He came to London in 1890 and, three years later, married Catherine Charlotte Raban (q.v.), known as Kate. Their two children were the novelists Alec and Evelyn Waugh. From 1893 to 1897, he was the London editor of the New York Critic magazine ; from 1902 to 1936, he was the managing director (later, chairman) of Chapman and Hall, the publishers of Dickens and, from 1928, of Evelyn Waugh. Arthur Waugh's own publications included biographies of Gordon, Tennyson and Browning and his autobiography, "One Man's Road" (1931).
