Birth: Jan. 9, 1864
Death: Jun. 15, 1932

The inscription reads : "Donald Maclean, Privy Councillor, Knight of the British Empire, President of the Board of Education 1931-2." Sir Donald was the eldest son of John Maclean, a cordwainer (skilled shoemaker) of Kilmoluag of Tiree, in the Inner Hebrides, and his wife, Agnes Macmellin. He practised as a solicitor before becoming a Liberal Member of Parliament, representing Bath (1906-10), Peebles (1910-1922) and North Cornwall (1929 until his death). He was Chairman of the Liberal Parliamentary Party from 1919-22. He was knighted in 1916, the same year in which he baecame a Privy Councillor. He is buried with his wife, Gwendolen, and his eldest son, Ian. Another of his four sons was Donald, the double agent, whose ashes were sprinkled on his parents' grave (qq.v.) (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
