Eleanor Farjeon
Birth: Feb. 13, 1881
Death: Jun. 5, 1965

Author who is best remembered for the lyrics to the song "Morning Has Broken". Eleanor Farjeon was born in London. Her father, Benjamin Leopold Farjeon, was a writer of Jewish descent. Her mother, Margaret, was the daughter of Joseph Jefferson, a well-known American actor who created the role of Rip Van Winkle. Eleanor was educated at home. At the age of four, she attended the opera and the theatre ; at the age of seven, she was writing stories on her father's typewriter. At sixteen, she wrote the libretto to an opera, with the music by her brother Harry, which was produced at the Royal Academy of Music.Three years later, she sold her first story, "The Cardboard Angel", to Hutchinson's Magazine for three guineas. Her first book, "Nursery Rhymes of London", was published in 1916, and was followed by some eighty novels, plays, poems, and books for children. In 1956, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal and the Hans Andersen International Medal for "The Little Book-Room" ; and, three years later, the Regina Medal for Life Work for Children's Writing. She never married, but had a thirty-year relationship with a schoolmaster, George Earle (known as "Pod".) In 1951, at the age of seventy, she became a Roman Catholic. She described her hobbies as "cooking and cats" and lived and died at 20 Perrins Walk, just around the corner from the churchyard where she is buried. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
