Frank Konieczny dies, active in local sports

Frank (Boners)Konieczny, 67, of 910 W. 20th St., Lorain, former Lrain city elmployee who was active for yars in local sports, died yesterday after being stricken with an apparent heart attack while watching snow removal workers near the Nativity BVM Church.

He was pronounced death later at st. Joseph Hospital.

Born in Arcadia, Pa., Mr. Konieczny lived in Lorain 58 years, employed for 24 of them as a city worker. He retired several years ago after four years with the city streets department, and he previously served 20 years as a handyman at
the city's Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Konieczny was active for years in local sports. He managed the Nativity BVM Church's championship Class D football team in 1926, and comanaged the church's light heavyweight football team the next year.

In 1929, he promoted armateur fights and from 1932 to 1937 he served as a softball umpire, including two years in 1932 and 1933 when he was umpire supervisor. He also managed the 1931 Hart's Jewelers girls' softball team.

A member of the Nativity BVM Church, Mr. Konieczny served many years as church councilman, and he was a member and past president of the church's Holy Name Society.

In 1967, he was named the Holy Name Society's first Man of the Year and society members and church councilmen will serve as pallmbearers for Mr. Konieczny.

He was also a member and past president of the United Polish CLub, a member of the MBC Lodge and the Sons of Poland Lodge.

Mr. Konieczny is survived by his wife of 41 years, Katherine; two daughters, Miss Dolores, at home, and Kathleen Hort, Wilmington, Minn.; a brother, Jack, Lorain; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Wochna, Cleveland and Mrs. Earl (Ann)Bailey, Long Beach, Calif; and a grandchild.

Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomrrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Dombrowski Funeral HOme, where parishioners,Holy Name Society members and church councilmen will recite the rosary tomorrow at 8 p.m. and where services will be Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Church services will follow at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Nativity BVM Church, with the Rev Joseph Hilinski, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
