Years ago he boated on the canal between Port Clinton and Philadelphia, carrying coal and provisions. He continued this for some time until; he became engineer at the Keystone rolling mills, at the foot of Pine. He held this position 20 years and then retired. Mr. Shunk also learned the trade of shoemaking and is a good mechanic. He is a veteran of the Civil war and served and enlistment of nine months.

Mrs. Shunk was born in Wales. She came to Reading from Orwigsburg shortly after her arrival in America. She is well preserved and will be 69 years of age on her next birthday, July 3.
