An accomplished guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, he was born in Manchester, England, and grew up in Crossgates. He co-founded "The Skids", his first successful band, with singer Richard Jobson in 1977, when he was 18. He then went on to form Big Country with fellow guitarist Bruce Watson in 1982, and achieved a Top-40 hit single in 1983 with the song "In A Big Country".
