Governor of Florida from 1961 to 1965: A native of Marion County he received his law degree from Harvard and returned to Florida where he served five consecutive terms in the state legislature. During his term as governor he emphasized education and conservation. Over one billion dollars was raised to erect new buildings on the state's college campuses. He focused on water control projects and obtaining land for recreational purposes. After his term, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him to served on the National Security Council and the Office of Emergency Planning.
