Death: May 18, 1924

A Civil War hero who fought along with 3 of his brothers. He lived thru imprisonment at Andersonville and later was one of the guards of Jefferson Davis. His brother Lank was killed, another brother was blinded and the other deafened by the war. He married Samantha Matthews, had 6 children and lived 82 years. Daniel is written about prominently in his grandson's (with the same name)book, "Lincoln's Veteran Volunteer's Win the War - The Hudson Valley's Ross Brothers and the Union's Fight for Emancipation". Dan moved to W. Virginia because he had nice experiences there in the winter of 1862. He was first a teacher and then studied medicine in Ohio. He was one of the few whites there who would treat blacks. Eventually his parents and sister came to live with him. He was the first depositor in the Old National Bank of Martinsburg, the county seat. His brother Lank, married his wife's sister Ada in 1875. Three of his 6 children became teachers. He erected a 4 sided memorial in Falling Waters Presbyterian Church cemetery in West Virginia. Falling Waters is not far from Hedgesville in Berkeley County. One side of the memorial marks the grave of his sister, Anna Marie , one side marks the memory of his brother William Henry who was wounded on May 5, 1864, died the next day on the battlefield, and his body was never recovered. The other two sides are for his father and a daughter. Dr Daniel exhumed the bodies of his father, Charles W. Ross, and his first born child Margaret, both of whom died in Kilbourne, and had them re-buried at Falling Waters.
