Oatis Surrena Jr., 79, who resided on Barkeyville Road, Grove City, since 1959, died at 9:16 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2006, in Grove City
Medical Center after an extended illness.
Born July 13, 1926, in Victory Township, Venango County, he was the son of Oatis P. Surrena Sr. and Bessie Collingwood Surrena.
Mr. Surrena attended Windy Point Elementary School and the VanDyke schools in Butler County.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater from Oct. 11, 1944, to June 11, 1946.
Mr. Surrena worked as a heavy equipment operator for both Heckett Engineer of Youngstown, Ohio, and the Oil City Coal Co. out of Rockland, William O. Goetz Sr., owner.
He was a member of the Pine Grove Rover Camper Club and the Classic Cruisers, both of Grove City, and the Huff American Legion Post No.
220 of Grove City.
Mr. Surrena was married Feb. 3, 1947, to Anna E. Roxberry, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Lewis L. Surrena and Robert E. Surrena and wife, Victoria L., all of Grove City, and Larry L. Surrena and wife, Darlene J., of Harrisville; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Gary (Mary) Brown of New Castle, Mrs. Dave (Margaret) Jewell of Kinsman, Ohio, and Lillian Schultz of Sharon; and five brothers, Russell Surrena of Grove City, Ray Surrena of Texas, Don Surrena of Brookville, Jack Surrena of Grove City and Sherrill Surrena of Jamestown, N.Y.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Surrena was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Surrena and an infant; one brother, Francis Eugene
Surrena; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, Clintonville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Jay Montgomery of the Edenburg Presbyterian Church,Knox, and the Rev. Sue Montgomery of the Nickleville Presbyterian Church, officiating.
The Franklin VFW Honor Guard will present the flag to the family.
Interment will be in the Rocky Springs Church Cemetery, Marion Township, Butler County.
