FORT WORTH - Maud Hammond Barkley, a retired high school history teacher, died Sunday at a Fort Worth retirement home after a long illness. She was 99.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today in Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis. J.E. Keever Mortuary in Ennis is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Barkley was born in Ennis and lived in Fort Worth for seven years.

She graduated from Texas Woman's University with bachelor's and master's degrees in history.

She taught high school in Ennis for 41 years.

Miss Barkley was a member of an Ennis pioneer family, and her grandfather Henry Burke was a captain in the Confederate army, serving with the 45th Tennessee Regiment.

Survivors: Nieces and nephews.
