Virginia Phillips McFarland, mother of the late Our Gang actor George "Spanky' McFarland, died Friday morning of pneumonia at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. She was 88.
Mrs. McFarland never recovered from the shock of her son's death June 30, said her daughter-in-law Theresa McFarland. She said Mrs. McFarland was admitted to Charlton's intensive care unit July 11 with pneumonia.
Virginia McFarland was born March 15, 1905, in Texarkana, Ark., and moved to Oak Cliff as a child. She graduated from Oak Cliff High School in 1922 and worked in her family's felt business until she married Robert McFarland in 1927. He died in 1958.
From 1931 to 1944, the family lived in California, where, as a child, Spanky McFarland starred in the Our Gang comedies. In 1966, Mrs. McFarland moved to Duncanville, were the family met monthly. Spanky McFarland was living in Keller at the time of his death.
Mrs. McFarland is survived by a son, Roderick E. McFarland of Lone Oak; a daughter, Amanda M. Hall of Cedar Hill; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Cedar Hill. Burial will follow at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis.
