Although Philena had no children of her own, she was the stepmother to Nathaniel's three young children by his 3rd wife Fanny White, and stepmother to Nathaniel's children by his 1st wife Sybil (q.v. Sibbel, Sibbley) Huntington. Following Nathaniel's death, in the July 1850 enumeration of the Town of Bridport, VT, Philena was residing with the family of her stepdau. Julia (Ripley) Rice, Julia being the dau. of Sybil (Huntington) Ripley. Due to both Julia and her husband Jonas Rice's death at Bridport prior to 1860, in the July 1860 enumeration of the Town of Rutland, VT Philena was residing with the family of her stepson William Ripley, also the son of Sybil (Huntington) Ripley.

Philena Wales and husband Nathaniel Ripley were 4th half cousins, Philena being a descendant of the Robinson family's immigrant ancestor Isaac Robinson (1610-1704, s. of Rev. John and Bridget (White) Robinson of Sturton-Le-Steeple, England and Leiden, Holland) through Isaac's son Peter by Isaac's historically unidentified 2nd wife. Nathaniel was a descendant of the immigrant Isaac Robinson through Isaac's dau. Fear (Robinson) Baker by Isaac's 1st wife Margaret Hanford. Separately, Nathaniel was a descendant of Elder William Brewster, who arrived in 1620 on the Mayflower and had been the Elder of Rev. John Robinson's Separatist church at Leiden.
