Betty Irene Schmuck, 75, of 14739 SR 53 West, Upper Sandusky, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay.
She was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Wyandot County to the late Walter E. and Leefee E. (Lawmaster) Shambaugh. On March 23, 1952, she married Donald E. Schmuck in Indiana; he survives.

Also surviving are: two sons, Douglas E. Schmuck of Sebastian, Fla., and Gary E. Schmuck of Forest; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Gene Shambaugh of Winfield, Kansas.

Preceding her in death were a son, Bradley, a brother, Robert E., and a sister, Lilly Mae Murry.

A 1941 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Schmuck enlisted in the U.S. Marines during World War II and served two years active duty. She was voted Miss South Pacific by the Marines. For the duration of the war, she worked as a supervisor at the bomb manufacturing plant in Marion.

She owned and operated the former Bon Ton Restaurant in Upper Sandusky.

She lived in Tiffin for six years, working at Kresge's and at General Electric. She then worked for 10 years for Dennis Barnes Realty, Upper Sandusky, where she retired as a secretary/receptionist.

She had worked at the former Westinghouse Corp, Upper Sandusky, and as a waitress at the former Evergreen Restaurant, Upper Sandusky.

A member of Findlay's Rebekah Lodge, where she was past noble grand, she was also a member of Eagles Auxiliary, Upper Sandusky; the Wharton Mother's Club; and American Legion Post 225, Upper Sandusky.

Mrs. Schmuck was a member of Wharton Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.

Visitation will be 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Searfoss officiating. Burial will be in Wharton-Richland-Union Cemetery in Wharton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wharton Methodist Church or to the Leukemia Foundation.
