christopher columbus casey was born september 9,1868 in newton county arkansas to uriah c. and jane casey. when "lum" was 3 years old, his father married rachel woodward on july 4, 1872 in newton county arkansas. rachel was the mother who raised him, and the only mother he knew.
when a small child, lum traveled with his family to kalispell, montana. the family settled there and lum became a cowboy at 15. he helped move cattle to different parts of the country to find grazing land and also he helped drive them to dodge city, kansas to be sold.
on a trip by train to visit relatives in limestone, arkansas, he met narcissus houston. they married on july 24,1887 in jasper arkansas. lum took his bride to montana to settle there. she would have none of it , so for the love of a good woman, he moved back to arkansas.
lum farmed those arkansas hills and he and "shug" had eight children. the first 3 died as infants, the remaining children are nettie, creasey, vera, era, and ira.
in 1918, the family moved to vian, oklahoma to again be near shugs family, by this time, nettie had married carl albert noe and moved to missouri, creasey had married walter stone and remained in limestone. shug and the younger 3 went by train and lum traveled alone by wagon with all the household goods.
the family moved into a house at box community owned by shugs brother ben and his wife kate. the home owners had gone to western oklahoma to pull boles. the labass family owned a store at box and immediately brought over a milk cow for the family to use until they got one of their own.
the family lived on various rented farms until they bought a place near upson switch. in 1945, they bought a house in vian. shug died 2 years later and lum lived there alone until his death in 1959.
lum was a christian, a gentle man with a quick laugh and a deep rumbling voice. he was devout church of christ and a good man.
lum was the son of uriah c., who was the son of moses, who was the son of ambler, who was the son of aaron, who was the son of jessee, who was the son of abner of tyrone county, ireland.
