OLD CONTRACTOR DIES AT HEIGHTS
Mr. J. W. Meyer, Old Resident of the Heights Dies in 77th Year
One who has for many years been a builder; one who has laid strong foundations, and built the sightly walls for many earthly houses in this community, has laid down the trowel, has dropped his tools, and in the faith of His fathers, answered the call of the Master builder, to enter the prepared mansions above.
Juergen Wilhelm Meyer was born June 23, 1847, at Sasendorf Province, Hanover, Germany, when after attending school he was confirmed in the Lutheran church, 1861. When 18 years of age he came to America, settled at Reedsburg, Wis., March 2, 1870, he married Miss Marie Hennings. In 1871, he came to live in Arlington Heights, which has, ever since been their home.
To Mr. and Mrs. Meyer, eight children were given. Six passed on before their father to the other life.
In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer celebrated their 50th or Golden wedding anniversary, to their family, a happy and memorable event.
A skilled mason, and a trusted contractor and builder in the past forty-five years, it would be interesting to recount the large proportion of walls, Mason (as he was commonly called) Meyer had built. Certainly a large, accreditable number.
For the past seven or eight years failing vigor had led him to give over the direction of his work to his son, Wm. A. Meyer, though he kept always in touch with the work. For some time his health had been failing and within the past month it was thought better to give up the old home, where with his wife he had spent so many years, and go to the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Kaiser, that she might the better care for both her father and mother, now no longer able to take the care of her invalid husband. About two weeks ago he was moved to his daughter's home, where Mr. Meyer after a severe relapse and much suffering, died Tuesday, June 12, 1923, aged 76.
Besides his bereaved wife, his companion for so many years, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. James Kaiser; one son, Mr. W. A. Meyer, and four grandchildren, Mrs. Kaiser's two sons, and one son and daughter of his son, Henry, who died several years ago.
The funeral was held in St. Peter's Lutheran church, Friday afternoon; burial at St. Peter's cemetery.
Mr. Meyer was one of the well-known and reliable citizens of the older generation, and he will be missed from the church of his faith and from the community. His sorrowing wife and his children have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
