| Birth: | Feb. 13, 1457 | | Death: | Mar. 27, 1482 |  French Aristocracy. Born Marie de Bourgogne the only child of Charles "The Bold" Duc de Bourgogne and Isabel de Bourbon. She was he father's soul heir and was occasionally known as Marie the Rich. She received her first proposal of marriage at age five. At her father's death at the siege of Nancy in January 1477, Mary was nineteen years old. Louis XI of France seized the opportunity to attempt take possession of the Duchy of Burgundy and also of Picardy and Artois. Marie rejected Louis XI's proposal that she marry the dauphin, Charles, and in August 1477 at Ghent, Belgium, she married Maximilian I von Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor, and French aggression was temporarily checked. The couple produced three children over the next four years including the future Philip I "The Handsome". At the age of 25, while falconing with her husband, her horse threw her, then landed on top of her, breaking her back. She died after lingering several days.
