In the 1940s, he began his career performing on the New York stages and was later nominated for a Tony Award. He made his film debut in "Reckless Age" (1944), followed my a supporting role in "Bright Victory" (1951). Some of his most notable screen performances were in "The Spirit of St. Louis" (1957), "The FBI Story" (1959), "The Hustler" (1961), "The Graduate" (1967), "Jaws" (1975) and "Brubacker" (1980). For TV, he appeared on the series "The Twilight Zone", "Perry Mason", "The Golden Girls", "B.J. and the Bear", "Rich Man, Poor Man" and many more.
