Alice Sharp (Sanger) Thayer Fenner is buried in the same plot as Walter D Bird and his wife Alice A. The marriage record of Walter and Alice A. represents that Alice A.'s maiden name is FORD, it noted that she was adopted by Albert & H E Ford. A handwritten note from a c.1945 cemetery transcription lists Alice A.'s maiden name as FENNER, daughter of Alice S. Fenner whose burial is listed next on the page. This descrepancy was investigated with the following findings:
Alice S Fenner and her daughter Alice A Bird are listed in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Plainfield,MA. In one, Alice Fenner's birthplace is CT, in the other it is Mass. In both censuses, she is listed as "mother-in-law" of Walter Bird, so it is reasonable to conclude she was, in fact, Alice's mother.
The 1900 census in West Brookfield lists the same Alice S Fenner as a wife of James Fenner. It gives her birth date as Oct 1827 in CT, and James' birth as Jun 1831 in NY. They had been married 33 years which would put marriage date about 1867 which matches 1866 date above. She had had 4 children, 3 of whom were still living.
James Fenner and Alice are listed in the 1870 census in Sturbridge,MA...no children. They are in Spencer,MA in 1880. No children in the household.
There seems to be no reason for Alice A. (and other children) to have been adopted by Mr & Mrs Ford other than the Alice S.' inability to care for them after the death of their father James Thayer. The person transcibing the cemetery obviously had not found the record of Alice S.' previous marriage to Mr. Thayer so it was assumed the younger Alice A.'s maiden name was that of her mother's, being Fenner.
