Joseph Coates "Joe" Carter Jr 55, of 11 Scuffle Hill, Martinsville, died Friday, April 9, in Winston Salem, NC. Born in Martinsville on July 20, 1937, he was the son of Mrs. Adele Pannill Carter and the late Joseph Coates Carter Sr.
He was preceded in death by a brother William Letcher Pannill Carter.

A graduate of Martinsville High School in 1955, he attended Virginia Tech and R.P.I. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour of duty in Italy.

Carter retired from Pannill Knitting Co in 1990. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was involved with CONTACT and the Patrick Henry Ham Radio Association.

Surviving is his wife, Judy Harris Carter, of the home, and two daughters, Virginia Letcher Carter of Winston Salem, and Margaret Elizabeth Carter of Hilton Head, SC. Five sisters include Lucy Carter Wilson of Martinsville, Coates Carter Clark of Stuart, Jane Carter Vaughn of Lynchburg, Dillard Carter Saunders of Irish Gap, VA, and Elizabeth Carter Blocker of Greensboro, NC
