Cooperstown Freeman's Journal (1 May 1957)
Letson P[aul] Stiles

The death of Letson P. Stiles, for the past 30 years a member of the staff of the Cooperstown postoffice, and a well-known figure in saddle horse circles, occurred in his sleep Tuesday night [23 April 1957] of last week at his home in Whig Corners. He was 49 years of age.

Mr. Stiles was born in the town of Middlefield on February 6, 1908, a son of C. Lynn and Esther (Gano) Stiles. He attended Middlefield district school and Cooperstown High School.

Mr. Stiles joined the staff of the Cooperstown postoffice as a substitute carrier on February 9, 1927 after having assisted his father as a substitute on the old Rural Route No. 1, which served the Pierstown area. After joining the postoffice staff, he was in charge of parcel post deliveries in the village. He was named a regular clerk on the postoffice staff on March 1, 1941, and at the time of his death he was money order clerk at the office.

Mr. Stiles had been a saddle horse enthusiast for many years, and participated in many horse shows throughout Central New York. He was one of the organizers of the Leatherstocking Riding Club of this village and was its president at his death. He also was a member of the New York State Saddle Horse Association.

He was also a charter member and a Past Master of Red Creek Valley Grange of Whig Corners. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown.

He married the former Miss Edith Hinds of Springfield Center on August 17, 1929 at Otego. She survives together with a son, Letson P. Stiles, Jr. of Altamont; a brother, Elbert Stiles of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Ingalls Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter A. Miller, pastor of the Hartwick Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Westville Cemetery.
