He was a founding member of the pioneer punk-rock band "The Ramones." The band was founded in 1974. Though not true blood brothers, they all adopted the last name of Ramone. Their first album, "The Ramones" was released in 1976. Born in Fort Lee, Virignia, he was raised in Berlin, Germany. After later moving to New York he worked as a construction worker, a post office employee, and a barber. He became interested in music and liked the garage rock sound, he played bass. With his band brothers, Joey, Tommy and Johnny, he penned many punk rock classics such as, "I Wanna Be Sedated," and "Teenage Lobotomy." In 1989 he left the band. He released his first solo album "I Hate Freaks Like You" in 1995. An earlier try at a single album had failed. He followed that up in 1997 with "Zonked." He later wrote an autobiography of his days in the band titled "Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones," and then he wrote a novel, "Chelsea Horror Hotel." During the last few years before his death The Ramones music had become the anthem for a new generation of teenagers with a renewed interest in punk rock music. Dee Dee and his band brothers were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Joey, his band brother, passed away in April 2001 from lymphoma cancer, he was 49.
