He moved into the state of New York just prior to the formation of St Lawrence County. He was the first settler in the area and was the founder of the township of "Hopkinton". The township of Hopkinton was formed on the 2nd of March 1805.
He was the first justice of the peace in Hopkinton and also judge of the court of common pleas. He was the first supervisor of the town for a term of four years, 1810-1813, he was elected to a seat in the legislature of New York State. He was the first president of the St. Lawrence County Bible Society.
