"John (Jack) Peter Eppinger, 72, born May 22, 1938 to William H. and Mary L. Eppinger in Maywood, CA, passed away at his home on January 18, 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Ellie; sons, Michael (Christine) Eppinger, San Antonio, TX, Daniel (Lynn) Eppinger, Tustin, CA and his daughter, Catherine (Harry) Schulz, Helotes, TX; 13 grandchildren; his former wife, Alice Eppinger; and step-sister, Barbara (John) Huber, Irvine, CA.
He was a graduate of the Univ. of Southern California with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jack served in the US Navy as an F-8 fighter pilot, test pilot and safety instructor, retiring on January 5, 1967, after tours in Vietnam aboard aircraft carriers the USS Lexington, Ticonderoga and Constellation. He earned the Navy Commendation Medal, Silver Star, Navy Unit Commendation, Expeditionary Medal, National Defense and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Upon retirement from the Navy, he began a career as a Commercial Pilot for Continental Airlines, retiring in 1983. He continued his professional life with Lockheed Martin (formerly, Martin Marietta).
Upon retirement, Jack left the Boulder, CO area in 2010 to move to San Antonio to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
In his youth, Jack belonged to the Order of the Arrow and was an Eagle Scout. He was active in the Erie, CO Masonic Lodge #50 as Past Master and as a member on the College Scholarship Fund Committee. He also supported the local youth as a shooting instructor for the Boulder County 4-H for many years.
Services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 2:45 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full Military Honors."
