Married Feb 22 1857 Josephine Rezanka. They had nine children but only 7 of these are known. His parents were Martin and Ludmila Smola. He was naturalized as U.S citizen in 1860. William had served as high-way commissioner for Edwardsville Twnshp for 14 years. He was a school director for 19 years. He donated land to the Peter's Station School District, and thus the "Smola School" was established at Peter's Station.
For years he farmed the land that his father had settled. Bought the land from his father in 1874. Wm died of an unexpected heart attack & per legal not leaving a will and estate problems a great deal of the homstead was lost and sold.
He was a staunch Democrat.
