Benjamin Bechthold, Lodi Rancher And Stockton Man At Hospital
A 34 year old mother and her young son were killed, and two other persons were hospitalized with serious injuries early last evening as a result of an automobile crash at the intersection of Kettleman Lane and Tully Lane, 4 ½ miles southeast of Lodi.
Dead were Mrs. Elsie Bechthold who was said by highway patrolmen to have been a passenger in the rear seat, and her 12 year old son, Leroy B. Bechthold, a sixth grade student at Lincoln School here, who was seated in the front seat of the automobile beside his father who was driving.
Two Hospitalized
In Mason Hospital suffering from shock, head lacerations and possible brain concussion is the father, Benjamin Bechthold, a farmer. The family resided just south of the U.S. 99 Bridge over the Mokelumne River north of the city. Also hospitalized with possible serious injuries is John Collum, 2922 Florida Street, Stockton, the driver of the other car. Collum was conscious following the accident but was taken to Mason Hospital and was given a sedative. The extent of shock is not known at present, but it is believed his physical injuries were not overly severe.
Highway patrolmen who investigated the mishap, officers, William R. Thomas and James Green, were unable to question Collum last night, but said they received a general picture of the tragedy from Bechthold.
Intersection Clear
According to the information they received, the accident occurred at about 5 o'clock. The Bechthold car was traveling west on Kettleman Lane while the Collum auto was going south on Tully. The patrolmen said the accident occurred at the intersection of the two roads, which is completely surrounded by pasture land for hundreds of yards in every direction.
The first report came to Wells Funeral Home from a motorist, Gordon Bell of 112 North Rose Street, Lodi. Bell said when he came upon the scene, Collum was wandering about the wrecks of the two cars in a dazed condition. The Wells ambulance responded to the call, and took Collum, Bechthold, and his son to Mason Hospital. Mrs. Bechthold was pinned under the car and was dead when the ambulance arrived.
Effects Futile
Persistent efforts by pulmotor to revive the boy proved useless, and he was announced as dead an hour or so after he arrived at the hospital.
Mrs. Bechthold was a native of Linton, North Dakota, and had resided here for 18 years. She was the daughter of Fred Pfeifer of Galt. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Jacob Pfeifer of Leavenworth, Washington; Albert Pfeifer of Lodi; Edwin Pfeifer of Sacramento; Leo Pfeifer of Woodbridge; Levering Pfeifer of Woodbridge; Fred Pfeifer Jr. of Lodi and Mrs. Ida Berg of Madera.
She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church of Lodi.
Funeral services are pending at the Wells Funeral Home.
