Oma N. Gwaltney, 86, Mill Shoals, died Saturday evening, June 2, 2007 at Hamilton County Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
She was born Aug. 25, 1920 in Mill Shoals, the daughter of Walter A. and Lura (Taylor) Garrett. She married Everett H. Gwaltney on Sept. 6, 1940 in Morganfield, Ky., and he preceded her in death on July 27, 1984.
Mrs. Gwaltney loved her family and enjoyed quilting. She belonged to Eastern Star for 58 years, the Springerton American Legion Auxiliary and the Carmi VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of Ashland Christian Church, having been baptized in 1933.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Vernon and Mary Lou Gwaltney of Fairfield and Ronald Gwaltney of Mill Shoals; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lena Melvin of Carmi; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sons, Charles "Chuck," Donald Ray and Elwood Gwaltney; one daughter, Connie Sue Gwaltney; two brothers, Lyle and Charles Melvin; her twin sister, Nona Sharer; and a daughter-in-law, Vickie Gwaltney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi, with burial in Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Eastern Star services will be held at 7 p.m. On-line condolences may be left at Kittinger-fairfuneralhome.com.
