Walter was in World War I and spent 21 months in France. He was married to Helen Curtis Campbell from 1922 until 1931. They had one child, Helen Patricia (Hagood), born in 1924. He was a farm implement salesman (Leake and Byers Co). Business was bad and he left the family during the Depression.
Walter remarried a woman named Emily B. He then married a woman named Anita M. Watson. (m. 1956) and they ended up in Cornelius, OR. An article was written about him in the Oregonian, "Bohemian in Roseburg" c. 1950 by Don Engdahl.
